Samsung Announces 980 NVMe SSD; Features DRAM-Less Design And More Affordable Price Point

Samsung Electronics today announced its new 980 NVMe SSD, the Korean electronics giant’s first consumer-ready high-speed storage to feature a DRAM-less.

Despite having been manufactured with a DRAM-less design, Samsung says that the 980 retains blazing fast NVMe speeds via Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology, which links the drive directly to the host processor’s DRAM. This design allows the 980 to retain NVMe 3.0 transfer speeds. On that note, the SSD can boast sequential read and write speeds of 3500MB/s and 3000MB/s respectively, while random read and write performances are rated at 500K IOPS and 480K IOPS, respectively.

Further, the 980 also features an upgraded Intelligent TurboWrite 2.0 feature, allocating a larger buffer storage area within the SSD. On another note, the SSD also sports some advanced heat dissipation technology via the use of Dynamic Thermal Guard, nickel-coated controller, and a special heat spreader label.

The Samsung 980 SSD is available in three capacities: 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB. Pricing starts at US$49.99 (~RM206) for the 250GB, US$69.99 (~RM289) for 500GB, and US$129.99 (~RM539) for the 1TB. Regardless of capacities, all variants come with a five-year limited warranty.
