The number of gaming smartphones expanded with the introduction of the Legion Phone Duel last year. And now in 2021, the list is growing yet again as Redmi has recently revealed that it will be launching one of its own in the near future.
This was officially announced by the company’s general manager Lu Weibing on Weibo, who also shared that Redmi’s first flagship gaming phone will also be offered at a “price that cannot be refused.” Further details regarding the device was not revealed at this time, but Lu somewhat hinted on what chipset it is expected to feature.
Also mentioned in the same announcement, the general manager added that Redmi will be the first brand to debut the newly revealed MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset. However, he did not directly confirm whether it’ll be equipped on the gaming smartphone, and it could be featured on a different device entirely.
MediaTek says that the new Dimensity chipset is capable of supporting display refresh rates of up to 168Hz, as well as software-driven ray tracing. Performance-wise, the new SoC is built on a 6nm process, featuring eight cores consisting of an ARM 3GHz Cortex-A78, three 2.6GHz Cortex-A78 and four 2GHz Cortex-A55 cores. The chipmaker claims that the Dimensity 1200 offers up to 22% faster CPU performance while also being 25% more power efficient than its predecessors.
Redmi’s decision to join the gaming smartphone fray is interesting, even more so for consumers who are hoping for a more affordable option. This would also see the company to potentially rival fellow Xiaomi subsidiary Black Shark, which already has three generations of gaming phones under its belt.
