Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 Goes Official: Offers A Slight Speed Boost Over Snapdragon 865 Plus

Qualcomm has unveiled a new addition into its Snapdragon 8 Series mobile processor family with the official announcement of Snapdragon 870. Despite its name and the recent release of Snapdragon 888, the lineage of the new chip is actually linked to the Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 865+.

In general, the Snapdragon 870 mainly carries a faster clock speed over the Snapdragon 865+ which itself is a souped version of Snapdragon 865. Specifically, the Kyro 585 CPU on the Snapdragon 870 can go up to 3.2GHz as opposed to Snapdragon 865+ which lingers around 3.1GHz.

Other elements within the Snapdragon 870 are pretty much identical to the Snapdragon 865+ including Adreno 650 GPU running at 670MHz as well as Hexagon 698 DSP and Spectra 480 ISP. Just like its successor, the 7nm chip doesn’t come with its own 5G modem although it can be paired with Snapdragon X55 5G modem.

Qualcomm stated that Snapdragon 870-powered devices are expected to make their debut within Q1 2021. iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi are among companies that have adopted the new processor for their products, so expect further announcements coming from them soon.
