Following up close to the launch of its Ryzen 5000 series CPU nearing the end of last year, AMD today officially launched and acknowledged the existence of its next-generation Ryzen 5000 Mobile series CPUs during its CES 2021 keynote.
The new Ryzen 5000 Mobile series processor also obviously came after the success of last year’s Ryzen 4000 Mobile series CPUs, which wowed us in no small measure with the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14. In total, three Ryzen 5000 Mobile series CPUs were announced onstage by Dr. Lisa Su, CEO at AMD: the Ryzen 7 5800U, as well as the company’s new HX Series mobile CPUs that comprises the Ryzen 9 5900HX and 5980HX.
Now, the three CPUs have a couple of features in common; they’re all based on AMD’s 7nm Zen 3 CPU architecture, and they all feature 8-cores and 16-threads. What sets them apart is that 5800U is primarily designed for longevity, while the other two are made for performance and overclocking on a slim and light form factor.
Getting back to the Ryzen 7 5800U, Dr. Su says that the new mobile processor should theoretically average around 17.5 hours of general usage or 21 hours of continuous video playback on a single charge. In terms of performance, she says that the 5800U should have a maximum boost clock of 4.4GHz.
Moving on, the 5900HX will have a boost clock of up to 4.6GHz, a 20MB large Cache – combined from its L2 and L3 Cache – and a 45W TDP, give or take a little more for good measure. Meanwhile, the 5980HX shares similar specifications as its sibling, but will be able to boost up to 4.8GHz instead.
As to when we can see the new AMD Ryzen 5000 Mobile series CPUs, AMD says that gaming laptops from its OEM partners should be releasing their laptops starting from this month. On a related note, Dr. Su did briefly mention that her company was already working on laptops running with GPUs powered by its RDNA2 architecture and that we can expect to see such laptops sometime during the first half of 2021.
