Tinkerer Gets Cyberpunk 2077 Running On Game Boy Inspired Raspberry Pi Machine

While the console version of CD Projekt Red’s (CDPR) Cyberpunk 2077 – specifically, the PS4 version – is currently having fans seeing red and scrambling for a refund, the game seemingly appears to run fine on the PC. Save for the litany of bugs and glitches that afflicts it and, in turn, breaks the immersion.

For one hobbist and tinkerer by the name of Wendell, the game’s playability on PC led him to do something else with it: make it playable on a Game Boy-shaped Raspberry Pi machine. Specifically, a PiBoy DMG that takes on the shape of the classic GameBoy.

If you’re wondering how Wendell managed to get the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 running natively on a tinker board, here’s the secret: he didn’t. What he did do, however, was to get the Steam version of the game to stream from a gaming rig directly to the PiBoy DMG.

On another note, we should point out that this GameBoy-esque machine isn’t your average tinkerer’s toy. In fact, the PiBoy DMG is a souped-up version of the original Game Boy, with the ability to accommodate a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Model 4, or Pi Zero. In this instance, Wendell’s PiBoy DMG was fitted with the Pi 4 Model B. The PiBoy DMG is also fitted with not two, but six front-facing buttons, two shoulder buttons, a thumbstick directly below the D-pad, and a massive 4500mAh battery to power it all.

While Wendell did manage to get the compact and portable console to run Steam Link without too much trouble, he also said that getting the machine to pair a Bluetooth keyboard and trackball to the machine took a bit of trial and error. Owning mostly to the firmware of the machine.

Now, it goes without saying that this is just a personal project of Wendell’s and that while it may seem like a fun party trick, you’re better off playing the game (and its bugs) on the PC, rather than streaming it on to a 3.5-inch display and squinting for the majority of it.
