Samsung has released a new app called GameDriver, which promises to offer better gaming performance for its smartphones. Users can opt to download either the Qualcomm/Adreno or Exynos/Mali versions of the app from Google Play Store.
According to the brand’s GameDev page, the new app basically acts as a driver update for the onboard Adreno or Mali GPUs in order to deliver stable and better performance for target games. In addition to this, releasing GameDriver on Play Store will enable Samsung to issue driver updates to its users as standalones, without the need of a system-wide update. At this time, the only known games that fully supports this are Call of Duty: Mobile, Fortnite, and Black Desert Mobile.
The company says that the standalone driver update is currently being released on a limited number of major Galaxy models for now, and will continue to scale with more devices added “soon”. The same can be said for the list of GameDriver compatible games, but the Korean giant has yet to reveal any expected or upcoming titles to be added.
It appears that with this approach, Samsung may have taken cues from GPU updates on PC from the likes of makers such as NVIDIA. What this means is that the company will periodically optimise the graphics processing capabilities of its smartphones, on top of the performance tweaks included in the latest versions of the listed games.
As mentioned earlier, GameDriver is available on Google Play Store now. Both the Adreno and Mali versions are downloadable as individual installers, but are only supported on the Samsung Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note20 series for now.
