If you’ve recently updated your Windows 10 OS with the latest 20H2 update and you’re planning on doing a Check Disk (ChkDsk) scan, you may want to hold off on that action. Especially if you’re running off an SSD.
Apparently, running the utility on the latest version of Windows 10 runs the risk of damaging files on the SSD, especially if you’re attaching the “/f” parameter, which commands it to fix the disk. As part of its procedure, initiating it prompts the OS to reboot for the decades-old utility to run at startup. For some users and their SSDs, the action can result in the blue screen of death, or more affectionately known by its acronym, BSOD.
It still isn’t clear as to why this issue is happening. Also, because the action damages file systems on the SSD, either an automatic or manual repair is required in order to get the affected system running again.
At the time of writing, Microsoft has not addressed the issue and has yet to release an official statement. Hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later.
