MediaTek Reportedly Becomes World Largest Smartphone Chip Vendor In Q3 2020

MediaTek is known for supplying chipsets for the more affordable variety of handsets from various brands. According to a report by research firm Counterpoint, it appears that the company’s perseverance has finally paid off as it has taken the position of the world’s largest smartphone chip vendor in the third quarter of 2020.

The firm says that MediaTek has earned revenues of US$97,275 million for this quarter, which is a significant 50% boost from last year’s data. Its record suggests that the Taiwanese chipmaker is ahead with 31% in the market share, while Qualcomm takes second place with 29% and companies such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei’s HiSilicon each tied at 12%. Meanwhile, Chinese company Unisoc takes last place with only 4% of the market share.

Counterpoint added MediaTek’s hike in sales are mainly thanks to its “strong performance” in smartphones within the US$100 (~RM400) – US$250 (~RM1,000) price range, which are well received in markets such as India, China and Latin America. Additionally, the report also noted that MediaTek-powered phone sales saw an increase of approximately five percent from last year, with more than 100 million units reportedly sold in the third quarter.

Both Qualcomm and MediaTek are currently the two major chipmakers in the world that are supplying their products to various smartphone brands. The former is more focused on providing chipsets for high-end and midrange devices, and had recently debuted two new smartphone processors for each category: the Snapdragon 888 and the Snapdragon 678, respectively.
