Guardians of the Galaxy #9 retold Star-Lord's origin story, revealing that Peter Quill is bisexual, leaving fans wondering if he will be in the MCU.
Within Al Ewing and Juan Cabal's current run of Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill explored life on Morinus and his sexuality. In Morinus, he discovered he's bisexual.
Star-Lord's recent reveal came in #9, as part of the cosmic hero's origin story that was retold in the issue. While this isn't the first time a Marvel comic creator examined where Peter Quill's history and/or powers -- depending on the run -- come from, Ewing billed this story as Starlord's "official" origin story, which also officially makes Star-Lord bi.
During his time spent on Morinus -- a mythic land, where Quill finds himself after sacrificing his life to defeat the New Olympians -- he befriended two humanoids named Arcadia, who is a woman, and Mors, who is a man. After twelve years together, Quill started a romantic relationship with them both. "It's been over a decade. Time to accept the truth," Quill said.
"You're my home," He continued while bathing with both Mors and Arcadia while holding both of them close.
Mors tells Quill, "Congratulations, Peter Quill. The you-that-was is over," and these words seem to mean more than just referring to Star-Lord's new dimensional living.
"Thanks for accepting me, guys," Quill says, and with that statement, writer Ewing cemented that being bi is Starlord's truth. Quill lived happily with the pair for the next hundred or so years, before returning to his original timeline to help the Guardians defeat the King in Black.
Since #9 debuted, fans are now wondering what this might mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's take on Star-Lord's sexuality within future films. So far within the MCU, we've only seen Star-Lord engage in heterosexual relationships. However, it's worth adding that not seeing him with a man or nonbinary person doesn't mean Star-Lord isn't bisexual, just that the films haven't explored or shared this side of him to date.
At the time of this writing, director James Gunn has yet to reveal any update on how this comic book change will or won't affect the script for the franchise's third and final film.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to begin filming in February 2021. Its current release date is targeted for 2023.
Guardians of the Galaxy #9 is written by Al Ewing, alongside artists Juan Cabal and Federico Blee. #9 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
