If you’re expecting Apple to implement an in-display fingerprint sensor on the display of future iPhone models, you’re in for a long wait. It’s very unlikely that the feature will be making its way to this year’s iPhone models, or next year’s models even.
According to renown Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, the company from Cupertino has expressed no plans to implement the new security feature on its devices anytime soon. While rumours initially suggested that the iPhone X would come built with this feature, Apple chose instead to implement its Face ID facial recognition feature.
Kuo also explains that another reason behind Apple’s decision was due to the limited support that the current crop of in-print fingerprint sensors are limited for OLED displays. Not only that, but the sensors reportedly only work within a specific location. Instead of the whole display.
But Apple’s decision should not be interpreted as a lack of interest in the feature. Kuo predicts that Fingerprint On Display (FOD) technology will play a big, if not vital role for smartphones. He even argues that the technology will grow as much as 500% in 2019 as Android smartphone makers continue to adopt the technology for their devices. On that note, Kuo speculates that Samsung might just become the first company to implement FOD technology on its next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S10, next year.
